    GROUP SHOW

    WALLS
    TIN-AW ART GALLERY BOOTH 9
    ART FAIR PHILIPPINES 2017
    16 – 19 February 2017

We are defined by the walls we build. History is dotted with spectacular examples: The Walls of Troy, The Great Wall of China, Hadrian’s Wall, the Berlin Wall, the apartheid wall dividing Palestine and Israel, and all the other geopolitical walls that have been set up of late.

The act of building walls occupies the juncture between ease and threat. Whilst some view it as refuge and integration, others consider it as segregation and obstruction. Walls assume a sense of apprehension from that which is outside or other from the self. Its construction in both the symbolic and literal senses dictates urgency for security and safety. Depending on the perspective, it can be considered as either defense or restriction. Oftentimes, situating aesthetic objects with them cushion their function.

For Art Fair Philippines 2017, Tin-aw Art Gallery, in taking a less than usual route, heightens awareness towards the panels of the exhibition space as the main idea. Through the works, the dividers and enclosures that define the exhibition area are forged.

“Walls” will feature works by Ambie Abaño, Leo Abaya, Pauline Abayon, Renato Barja Jr., Anton del Castillo, Charlie Co, Francis Commeyne, Cian Dayrit, Lyra Garcellano, Riel Hilario, Mark Justiniani, Kurt LLuch, Joy Mallari, Leeroy New, and Lee Paje. The show will run from February 16-19, 2017 at Art Fair Philippines, 6th floor roofdeck, The Link Carpark, Ayala Center, Makati City.

  • A Wall Project

    Leo Abaya

The proposition is this: make works that call attention to that ubiquitous instrument of civilization, which define the limits and boundaries of groups and societies that comprise this planet.

Even for a moment, remove the expedience of walls as loci of the tokens of human achievements and vanities, comfort and security. Reflect that these functional partitions and efficient structures also divide individuals, families, cultures, and nations, upholding false purisms, largely restricting and impinging on the free movement of goods and ideas, or else promoting paranoia that jeopardizes the notion of difference as basis to temper the will to power, regulated if not monopolized by those who already have it in large amounts.

In distant and recent histories, walls have risen and fallen, almost coterminus with the thinking(s) and regimes that rected them. When walls - any kind - are put up, everyone knows something is in the offing.
