Henrielle Pagkaliwangan
Henrielle Pagkaliwangan’s “Inventory,” a solo exhibition of works on paper opens at Tin-aw Art Gallery from 17 June to 8 July 2017.
The show is a continuation of Pagkaliwangan’s fascination with the numerous configurations of categorization. It also explores what the artist deems to be the origins of this attraction: her family’s hardware store.
In “Inventory,” Pagkaliwangan portrays not just how items are grouped in the store but also the underlying narratives in a customer’s order: their needs and preferences, the construction projects they have in mind, their conformity (or lack thereof) to the trends associated with holidays and weather seasons. Depicted via ink and watercolor are hardware staples such as white sand, gravel, hollow blocks, and cement amongst others, all depicted in the style reminiscent of natural history or taxonomic illustrations—a style that, aside from cleanly illustrating an assortment of subjects, entails a process resembling the mundane task of jotting down grocery and to-do lists: methodical and pragmatic yet deeply and characteristically personal.
Henrielle Pagkaliwangan graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Fine Arts in 2015. She has taken artist residency in Kapitana Gallery, Talisay, Negros Occidental. Her works have also been shown in Sangkring Art Space in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and the VT Art Salon in Taipei, Taiwan. She recently won grand prize in the Don Papa Art Competition 2017.
