Kada Adlaw | Art Fair Philippines 2018
01 Mar - 04 Mar 2018
GROUP SHOW
The gallery is an open space of possibility. As an in-between, it acts as a intermediary between the point of production and the point of exchange to its viewers. Often seen as a white cube, the public is only privy to the output of these negotiations — pristine walls and pedestals that carry completed art pieces, supplemented with wall texts to frame these creative ideas. To enter these spaces is to be greeted with the smiling staff, willing to assist and serve the possible client and explain the art to ready listeners.
The work that occurs behind closed doors remains hidden from many. The cycle of operations only knows waves of slowing down but never pauses. The preparation stage includes coordination with artists and all external collaborators, which may take the form of formal meetings to countless conversations. This happens as early as a year before the actual show up to the weeks that lead up to it. At times, the gallery also involves itself in the actual production, in helping the artists source for materials and contractors. In the same breath, the gallery also ensures that logistical support — installers, trucking, printers, caterers — and operational support — preparation of schedules, contracts, works lists, certificates and possible buyers—are all ready when the pieces are brought to the space. The entire time, one has to maintain a certain composure in facing all its external associates --- to follow up ever-so gently in order to make sure deadlines are met without making it seem like anyone is under pressure. Upon overcoming opening night, sales and continuous promotion begin, while at the same time juggling other upcoming projects and events.
For its 10th year, Tin-aw Art Gallery literally opens its doors to the public through a full disclosure of this two-pronged role. By bringing the exhibition space and its office to the art fair, viewers get to experience not only the final output but also be able to see the frantic but delightful encounters that happen behind it. The changing of shows through daily shifting of color schemes punctuate the range of its exhibitions in the last decade. The space’s monthly routine on the other hand put on display its performative aspect.
Kada Adlaw or the every day revel in the hectic realities of the gallery with its own share of challenges and pleasures, all fueled by the belief in the art and the people that they carry.
